The History Behind the British Flag

The tale of the Union Jack begins in the early 17th century when King James I, who was the king of England and Scotland, decided to create a single flag to represent both countries. In 1606, the saltire (diagonal cross) of St. Andrew, representing Scotland, was combined with the red cross of St. George, symbolizing England. This new flag, known as the Union Flag, was officially adopted in 1801 after the Act of Union, which united the Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland.

Over time, the design evolved to include the red saltire of St. Patrick, representing Northern Ireland, giving birth to the Union Jack we know today. By understanding the history and meaning behind the flag, children can develop a deeper appreciation for its significance and the spirit of togetherness it represents.
