Palm Sunday Coloring Pages: Free Printables for Kids

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week in Christianity, honoring Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. To engage children and Sunday school classes in this significant event, coloring pages can be a fun and educational tool. Here, we'll explore Palm Sunday-themed coloring pages, their importance, and some creative ways to use them.

Coloring pages bring lessons to life, providing a hands-on, interactive experience for kids. They offer a chance for children to connect with the story of Palm Sunday on a personal level, understanding the narrative while developing their artistic skills. Moreover, these activities can foster a deeper appreciation for the story and its significance.

Popular Palm Sunday Coloring PageScenes

Palm Sunday coloring pages typically depict scenes from the Bible that tell the story of Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Here are two common scenes and their significance:

Jesus Entering Jerusalem

The most iconic scene portrays Jesus riding a donkey, surrounded by cheering crowds. Children can color the palm branches the people are holding, the garments they spread on the road, and the burning branches used as torches. This scene symbolizes Jesus' humble arrival as the King of Kings.

By coloring this scene, kids learn about the event's magnitude, the people's enthusiasm, and Jesus' humility, encapsulated in his mode of transport – a simple donkey, not a grand horse-drawn chariot.

The Crowds Cheering "Hosanna"

Another popular scene captures the moment when the crowds shout "Hosanna" ("Save now"), laying their cloaks and palm branches on the road. This scene emphasizes the public's devotion and Jesus' solemn entry into the city, foreshadowing his eventual sacrifice.

Coloring this scene allows children to engage with the story's emotional depth, helping them grasp the complexity of Jesus' mission and the raw, unfiltered joy and expectation of the onlookers.

Creative Uses of Palm Sunday Coloring Pages

Beyond simple coloring, these pages offer opportunities for creative learning and craft-making. Here are two engaging activities:

Storybook Creation

Print multiple copies of a Palm Sunday coloring page. Once children have colored them in, encourage them to cut out the scenes and glue them into a small booklet. Let each child narrate their interpretation of the story, using their pictures as visual aids. This activity combines art, storytelling, and personal expression.

To extend the learning, children can illustrate and add more pages to their booklets, describing the events leading up to Palm Sunday, as well as Jesus' trial, crucifixion, and resurrection – creating a simple Easter storybook.

Paper Chain Craft

Provide children with plain paper strips and Palm Sunday coloring pages. Once the coloring pages are complete, help children cut them into smaller, chain-link shapes. Glue the ends together to create paper chains, symbolizing the unity of the crowd welcoming Jesus.

As a class, create a large paper chain by interlocking the individual chains. This craft serves as a tangible reminder of the community and unity present at Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Hang the chain in the classroom or church as a decorative Palm Sunday feature.

As you embark on this creative and enriching journey with Palm Sunday coloring pages, remember that the goal is not merely to keep children occupied, but to inspire engagement, curiosity, and a lasting connection with the story and its meaning. By doing so, these simple coloring pages transform into teachable moments that echo Jesus' teachings and love.
